Nurse practitioners play an important role in health care. The ability to transition registered nurses to nurse practitioners is important to society. Having access to healthcare can be difficult for some, and nurse practitioners can help fill the voids where there is a shortage of providers. Setting standards of character and furthering the field of medicine for nurse practitioners is also essential. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) devised a list of nine characteristics that are key in shaping nurse practitioners. Scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice are the named categories for the nurse practitioner competencies (NONPF, 2012). Involvement in all nine categories will make nurse practitioners well-rounded and influential.
Leadership is a broad category. Schumacher and Risco (2017) point out that competencies are in place to assist students in building skills, knowledge and behaviors required for graduates of the program. Leadership qualities listed by the NONPF (2012) include the ability to lead change by collaborating with the community, patients and policymakers to improve care, utilizing critical thinking in practice, improves access, quality and cost of the care delivered and can effectively communicate with the written and spoken word.

I have been in leadership roles most of my life. Beginning in high school I was always part of the student council, class treasurer, class president, and co-editor of the yearbook. As I worked, I have ended up in a leadership role in most of my place of employment. I view the ability to serve in leadership roles as a compliment. Currently, I am a nurse manager and, though there are challenges, I enjoy being able to assist and support my team.
As a student, looking into the future for ways I can implement leadership in clinical practice is part of shaping my abilities. Building relationships with leadership and administration within my workplace is an essential step in having a voice for nurse practitioners. Poghosyan & Bernhardt (2018) report that in many organizations, nurse practitioners often are not included on influential boards and get left out of information sharing in favor of physicians. Situations in which hierarchy interferes or the lack of understanding about the skills and knowledge of nurse practitioners leaves out an influential voice. Collaboration between disciplines is a vital aspect to change in healthcare and enhances the fact that all systems are dependent on one another (Melinda, 2017). I plan to have good rapport and relationships with my leaders and colleagues to ensure my thoughts and work are taken seriously.
Joining a professional nurse practitioner organization is another way I plan to implement leadership in my practice. Knowledge about policies and laws at the local and national level is important in coming up with ways to improve the care clinicians provide. Working with others to shape the way healthcare functions is integral to change in our nation, and I look forward to being part of the change. I hope to be influential locally and at a higher level to help care for the patient population I have the privilege to care for.
