As a health educator, the role of a nurse is to enlighten people on making informed decisions about their heath, preventing diseases and helping people achieve a peaceful aging and death. Most importantly, nurses play a critical role in promoting the government’s initiative of achieving quality health care by educating masses on prevention of diseases at the primary health care level (Smith & Rakauskas, 2015). As a successful health educator, a nurses needs to act as a friend, confidant and advocator who is easily approachable and sociable in nature. Patients and masses at large only learn about health issues if they are certain that the nurse is open minded, non-judgemental and does not disclose their health status. Individual health status is a sensitive issue that the nurse as a health educator has to approach delicately.
When developing tailored educational programs a nurse educator needs to devise strategies such as addressing language and cultural barriers and assure them confidentiality. Cultural barriers affect the ability of people to learn. Here, people and patients will most likely trust an educator of the same cultural background or an individual who understands the learner’s beliefs. Values and cultural ideologues. To a large extent, understanding the learner cultural aspects such as language helps crate rapport and cooperation between the nurse educator and the target population.
In health promotion, behavioural objectives should be utilized when the nurse educator has identified specific health care needs and gaps that need to be addressed appropriately. Behavioural objectives are measurable in nature and therefore, only applicable to a specific population at a particular point and time. Such objectives should also be formulated when the nurse educator is certain the people are willing and ready to start learning. It should be understood that learning is social process that encompasses the interaction between the learner and educator. When the relationship between the two parties is healthy, then learning outcomes are positive.
