I was volunteering at a food sorting/product rescue center in the evenings. I would carry out my daily duties in the morning hours before heading to the gym before lunch for one hour. The gym was supposed to prepare me for my voluntary operations. After the gym, I would take a bath and head to the New York warehouse where the food bank was established.
I was attracted by the mission of the center which was fighting to end hunger, not only in America but the third world nations especially in Asia and Africa. At the warehouse, there were various operations; the other volunteers and I were involved in doing. I was involved in sorting the different food types that were found in the warehouse. After sorting, the next operation was packaging to make sure that the food and personal care products were packaged in the correct manner and labeled in a way that it will be easy to identify which products go who the local partners’ agencies. There are lots of products donated, and the local partners are more than six hundred; therefore, there is a lot of work to be done in the food bank.
The best leadership in the center is a partnership leadership style. Partnership helps in motivating all the volunteers so that they can keep assisting in sorting the food materials and making sure that it has been transported to the local partners. I volunteer in the food bank because it is a social welfare program. The disadvantaged people in the society benefit most since they get the donations which have been brought in the society. In addition, it is a way of saving a life somewhere.
