This is one of the well-weaved stories of Bret Harte. This is a narration of a story about Tennessee’s partner whose real name is concealed which we learn not to be uncommon in the society of Tennessee’s partner. The narration rests on the theme of judicial justice which is portrayed to us by the Hanging of Tennessee following acts of robbery with violence.
The main character of the story is Tennessee’s Partner who the author characterizes as a morally upright guy while Tennessee is a thief. There is frequent use of a descriptive form of narration. For instance, “It was a warm night, the cold breeze sprang up…” (Harte 1208). In addition to this, another form of descriptive narration is seen when Harte (1209), states, “She was not an opposing figure shot and stout…” The author also describes Tennessee as popular and yet he is a thief. This is a good use of iron a style of writing. Personification is also used in this essay when the author state “Grass blades begun to peep….” (Harte 1213).
The theme of corruption in the judiciary is also analyzed in this short story. This is inferred when Tennessee’s Partner tries to bribe a judge for the release of Tennessee. In addition to that, the theme of justice is also narrated to the audience when the author informs us that the Judge had already made a decision on the case before listening to the presentation of the case. The theme of human rights is also presented by capital punishments given in courts.
